  1. Are you teaching Hwa Yu T’ai Chi as self defense or as a health/fitness class? I’ve heard a lot about it as a stress relief and mental self-discipline, but I know it is also a martial art form.

    1. I teach both aspects of T’ai Chi Ch’uan – health and self defense – but most people practice T’ai Chi for health, stress relief and mental discipline. You are right that it is a powerful martial art. Learning to do the movements perfectly through slow, fluid, unbroken motion is an important reason why T’ai Chi can be so effective when delivered at full speed and power. I demonstrate the martial arts significance of each movement to students so they understand how to use it in a self defense situation.
