Kata and Bunkai Training Monday Night

Grace Martial Arts Kata
Grace Martial Arts Kata

Greetings! We have one more training night before testing in June. We’ll focus on Kata (Forms) and Bunkai (Form Applications).

Kata contains the pattern of martial arts movement, while Bunkai contains the purpose. Once we understand the purpose of movements within our Kata, we are able to express that purpose as we train. Learning Bunkai in our earliest Katas, like Mawashi and Taikyoku Ichi (Ki Cho Hyung Il Bu), helps us understand the purpose of all Kata that follow. The purpose of martial movements will reveal themselves to those who commit to understanding their Kata. We learn to see each movement as having many possibilities: escaping, blocking, striking, trapping and throwing.

We’ll spend the entire class Monday night (May 23) working on our Kata and Bunkai. We’ll take one Monday off for Memorial Day (no class May 30). Testing begins on June 7th and finishes on June 14th.

Also, keep working on memorizing your Bible verse(s) and Christian character qualities. We must train our spirit harder than we train our body and mind (1 Timothy 4:6-10).

I look forward to seeing you at class!

In Christ’s Love and Grace,

Mark McGee

  1. Glad to see you putting so much emphasis on bunkai. So many people only focus on kata movements to pass gradings, without having any idea how to use these movements.
