Promotions in Alabama

Congratulations to Allen Berry for earning his 2nd Degree Black Belt in Yon Ch’uan Martial Arts. And .. a big thanks to Sensei Mark Fisher for driving all the way to north Alabama last week to help me test Allen.

I’ve known Allen since he was a young man when I hired him in the 1990’s to be a video editor at the television station where I was a news manager. We both earned our Black Belts in Tang Soo Do and Tae Kwon Do (Moo Duk Kwan) from the same instructor. Allen also has training in Shotokan Karate and Jeet Kune Do.

We reconnected after I moved back to Alabama ten years ago and he’s been learning Yon Ch’uan and Iaido since that time. We moved to Zoom training during the Covid lockdown in 2020 and have continued to do that since my illness worsened.

I tested Allen for all of the solo techniques via Zoom, but needed him to have a partner for the Judo and Judo Self Defense testing. Sensei Mark Fisher volunteered to drive more than 600 miles each way to help with the testing.

Our Alabama school is quite small now that I am not able to do in-person training, but I appreciate the opportunity God has given me to work with many wonderful young people. Fortunately because of modern technology (e.g. Zoom, FaceTime), I am still able to be involved as an instructor. I look forward to what God holds in store for the future.

Testing in the Alabama sun!
